Building Community by Welcoming Volunteers

This workshop, which is aimed at all those who are tasked with welcoming and supporting volunteers (informally and formally) will consider the significant impact community benefit organizations make locally. We will develop an informal inventory of how participating organizations benefit communities in practical ways. On the basis of defining what success looks like, we will talk about creating the advantageous conditions for amazing outcomes for the communities we serve, for volunteers themselves, and for our programs. We’ll explore tools that can guide the work, discuss ways of engaging new volunteers and consider what it takes to keep them active once they’re oriented. Finally, we’ll talk about three keys to successfully recognizing volunteer contributions, in our organizations and in the community at large.

Facilitator: Gayle Valeriote is the Manager of Training and Consultation at Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington. Her background in leadership, citizen participation, community development and education is combined with more than 25 years experience working with a wide variety of community benefit organizations and boards of directors.

Beyond Barriers: AODA and Accessible Customer Service

Everyone has a role to play in making Ontario accessible for people of all abilities. This clinic is an opportunity for staff and volunteers from local organizations to come together to discuss the Accessible Customer Service Standard related to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Facilitated by Vanessa Henrichs of the Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Regiion, this clinic will provide a safe space to do a check on how participants' training, policies, and organizational awareness of disabilities is progressing. Vanessa will share best practices on inclusion, answer questions on the customer service standrard that have arisen, and explore the accessible customer service policies and procedures that organizations should have in place.

Volunteer Canada’s Ten Safe Steps is a practical, easy-to-use guide to screening that can help you reduce the risks that your organization faces. Join us for this supplemental clinic on the Ten Safe Steps to learn about what they are, how to apply them and what policy considerations must be addressed. In the voluntary sector, many Boards are now asking, “what does it mean to give leadership through governance?” This workshop, aimed at Board members and Executive Directors, will be founded on a renewed understanding of what leadership means for voluntary Boards. Upon this foundation, we will explore how relationships with senior staff can be strengthened through clarity around the core purpose of the organization and new ways to engage the community in the organization’s mission. This practical workshop, led by a Chartered Accountant with experience in the not-for-profit sector, will help Board members, Board Treasurers and newer Executive Directors to have greater understanding and ownership of financial practices in their organization. The focus in the first workshop will be on responsibilities, financial policy, ethical considerations, audits, budget development, banking, and more. The second session will bring participants back together to consider what they are doing to apply what they’ve learned.

Changes in Police Records Checks

Police records checks can be a valuable step in your organization’s volunteer screening process. With recent changes made by the RCMP and recommendations made by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police to the police records check process, your organization’s screening process may be affected. Join us for this workshop to find out what these new changes are and how potential volunteers will be affected. Topics include: the three levels of police records checks; the ten changes to records checks; and the impact the changes will have on your agency. Please note that there is a workshop in both Cambridge and Guelph. As each police service manages records checks differently, agencies who use the Waterloo Region Police Service should attend the Cambridge workshop, and those who use the Guelph Police Service should attend the Guelph workshop.

Facilitators: The Waterloo Region workshop will be facilitated by Paul Cormier, the Records Manager & Freedom of Information Coordinator for the Waterloo Regional Police Service. We are excited to announce the beginning of the second year of the Guelph & Wellington Executive Directors’ network! In discussing this idea with Executive Directors, we found that their greatest interest was to be part of a group for learning about trends in the sector, sharing their experiences and exploring ways they can give leadership to their organization. They told us they were looking for an environment that was forward-thinking and supportive and this network will be facilitated on the basis of those interests. Program Overview

We’ve heard local managers of volunteers say that they want to be able to connect with each other and discuss topics that are relevant to the work that they do so that they can take their work to the next level. This forum will be an opportunity to discuss best practices and new ideas pertaining to volunteer recruitment, retention, training, evaluation, and recognition. It will also be an opportunity to discuss engaging the community in volunteerism, particularly youth, seniors, new Canadians, and high-skilled professionals.

This group meets in the morning on the first Tuesday of each month from September 2011 - June 2012. There will be no meeting in April.

The next meeting will take place on January 10 from 9:30am-11:30m at Women in Crisis.

On December 8, in honour of International Day of the Volunteer (December 5), the Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington will be hosting a summit for Executive Directors, Managers of Volunteers, Board Members, and other individuals involved in the leadership of volunteers. In response to recent research from Volunteer Canada’s Bridging the Gap report, this summit is intended to create dialogue on how we can better strengthen our practices in welcoming and engaging volunteers to better meet the needs of prospective volunteers, organizations, and the community.

Conestoga College’s
Certificate Program in Senior Leadership and Management

Conestoga College in partnership with the Volunteer Action Centre, Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington and the Cambridge and North Dumfries United Way launched the Certificate Program in Senior Leadership and Management in September 2010.

This program is specifically designed for Executive Directors and senior leaders of not for profit organizations to gain increased knowledge, skills and perspective to manage and lead community organizations. The ten courses include topics such as governance, facility management, leadership, strategic and operational planning, financial and human resource management, and more.

Many agencies can anticipate major shifts in the leadership of their organizations due to upcoming retirements or may have executive directors or senior leaders wanting to enhance their skills and learning.

This session will give you further details about the program and a chance to ask questions of the Program Coordinator. The next program intake is September 2011. There are limited subsidies available for this program.

Fundraising, Learning by Example

Fundraising is major task that all community benefit organizations must complete, but it is important that these practices are executed in a way that complies with policies outlined by the Canada Revenue Agency. Facilitated by Steve Cino, a representative from the Canada Revenue Agency, this workshop will give participants the opportunity to learn about best practices in fundraising and more importantly, which fundraising practices are prohibited by the law. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the new skills being presented to them through group work and analysis of case studies and scenarios. Participants will also be able to take tools away with them to use within their own origination. This workshop is a great resource for new staff in a fundraising role or for experienced fundraisers who may already be familiar with fundraising practices but could use more information about specific rules and regulations implemented by the Canada Revenue Agency.

We’re partnering with Student Volunteer Connections (SVC) at the University of Guelph to present this interactive workshop that will shed important light on what it takes to effectively engage youth volunteers as builders of community benefit organizations in Guelph & Wellington County (and beyond). We’ll hear from young people who feel that their volunteer talents have been effectively used, and we’ll hear from Volunteer Managers who feel that their organization has been effective in welcoming the leadership and talents of young people. Afterwards, we’d like to hear from participants in a World Café session, discussing what it would take to see young people actively involved in all sorts of community building.

This workshop is part of SVC’s annual conference, “Do So Much Weekend”. The “Do So Much Weekend” will take place at the University of Guelph on January 28 – 30, 2011, and will be a 3-day event that ignites, educates, and challenges students to make an impact on the local community through positive social action. The weekend features innovative thoughts on modern issues, crucial skill development, community participation, party for good, and social networking with students, non-profit leaders, and engaged citizens.

This year, the Volunteer Centre will initiate an exciting pilot project in the form of an Executive Directors’ network. In discussing this idea with Executive Directors, we found that their greatest interest was to be part of a group for learning about trends in the sector, sharing their experiences and exploring ways they can give leadership to their organization. They told us they were looking for an environment that was forward-thinking and supportive. This network will be facilitated on the basis of those interests.

This group will meet on the first Thursday of each month until June 2011.
