In the voluntary sector, many Boards are now asking, “what does it mean to give leadership through governance?” This workshop, aimed at Board members and Executive Directors, will be based on a renewed understanding of what leadership means for voluntary Boards. Upon this foundation, we will explore how relationships with senior staff can be strengthened through clarity around the core purpose of the organization and new ways to engage the community in the organization’s mission. This is a hands-on, interactive workshop, with plenty of information and analysis to take away. Facilitator Bio: Gayle Valeriote’s background in leadership, community development, education and social justice is combined with 27 years’ professional experience working with a wide variety of community benefit organizations, in roles as a Board member, staff and as a volunteer. Her work has taken her far and wide: just a few of her involvements include board leadership roles with Creating the Future (Arizona), the Guelph Police Services Board, Canadians Concerned About Southern Africa (National), Ontario Council for International Cooperation, Action Read Community Literacy Centre and the Guelph Food Cooperative. Her educational background includes an Honours B.A. in History and International Development from the University of Guelph and a B. Education from the University of Toronto. Date: Saturday, March 2, 2013 Time: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Location: Zehrs Community Room - Laurentian Power Centre, 750 Ottawa St S, Kitchener Participant limit: 15 people Fee: $97 per person (includes lunch)
